In 16th-century Japan, the turmoil of a civil war marks the lives of the people. An urban marketplace with numerous stalls entices them with its promises of good fortune: The potter Genjuro wants to earn a lot of money by selling his wares, while his colleague Tobei wants to achieve fame and glory as a samurai. This is where the two start going astray, largely at the expense of their wives, who are left behind. Dreams and fantasies become mirages and phantasms: On a boat passage, death drifts past them like a phantom, Genjuro falls for the ghost of a deceased princess. (mg)
